Your personalized coach on your mobile: ACTIVE8ME APP

As a busy working professional, I find it a personal struggle to look after my body’s holistic wellness in terms of eating well; going to the gym and getting the exercise I need while juggling multiple demands at work and home. Most of the time, I feel time-strapped. Therefore, when I heard about the launch of Active8me, an integrated fitness, health and wellness platform that is the brainchild of Jeremy Rolleston – two-time Olympian who is passionate to motivate and equip others on their health and wellness journeys; Fay Hokulani – Fitness expert and Jaclyn Reutens – Nutrition Expert who has 15 years of experience in the nutrition and dietetics field, I downloaded the app without further ado, to see what it entails. I was amazed to see how this app functions as an all-in-one PERSONAL TRAINER There are daily customised workout plans that you can choose from, which come with comprehensive step-by-step instructions for easy induction. That’s not the only thing! You can also choose the workout that is best suited according to your …

Top 23 Vegetarian Restaurants in Singapore (you won’t realize there is no meat!)

Because of my mum’s cancer journey, I have learnt to become very picky about her food if she wanted to eat out. It is pretty hard to find fully organic restaurants in Singapore, but here are some of our top picks that try to be as clean and healthy as possible while retaining the yummy taste! 1) Afterglow Afterglow – Probably the one and only organic cafe focused on RAW food. Food is exquisitely made with intricate flavours. Good as a treat but the prices are too steep for everyday dining. We pay for effort as it does take a lot of effort to take raw food, let alone yummy raw food. My favourites – Deconstructed Sushi Bowl, Raw Lasagna and Pink Soy Latte Address: 24 Keong Saik Rd, Singapore 089131 Phone: 6224 8921 2) Real Food One of the original pioneers of real, organic, no MSG, vegan food in Singapore, Real Food is doing well with 3 outlets in Novena, Orchard Central (previously Killiney), South Beach and Central. They also 2 outlets in Malaysia! 3) Elemen One of …

Adam Taste @ Thomson V Two

After a great tipoff from the Vegetarian Society folks, we managed to find Adam Taste at Thomson V Two and it was a great find! Newly opened on 20th Sep too! It is a very spacious, comfortable cafe.. I guess it is a tradeoff – you can have a much bigger area in a place with relatively low footfall. Still relatively uncrowded since it is only been opened for 2 weeks now. The servers all seem to be kids of the couple who owned the place; they all seem a little stressed out by the kitchen’s operations but helpful nonetheless! The menu is also relatively limited at the moment – only hotpot, wanton noodles, nasi lemak, spaghetti, baked rice with drinks and fresh juices (not cold-pressed in case you are wondering). The food is pretty good quality though. We shared the Hot Pot and Nasi Lemak.  The Hot Pot‘s Tom Yum paste tasted pretty authentic. Serving size was pretty decent too for $12.90. I tried the vegetarian Nasi Lemak. I enjoyed the curry a lot, though …

elemen @ Thomson Plaza

element @ Thomson Plaza is definitely one restaurant we regret not bringing our pro camera!! The ambience and food was so awesome we also focused so much on eating we have a few pictures only. But definitely going back for this #musttry. Love what they stand for – vegetarian, wholesome and minimum processing. We learn that elemen is backed by the Koufu chain; explains why they have the scale/marketing capability to attract a fairly good crowd on a weekday night for a vegetarian restaurant. They are currently having an opening special until 12th Oct 2015; good value $18.80 for a 5 course yummy healthy meal! The 5 courses include 1 appetiser, 1 soup or salad, 1 main, 1 dessert and 1 beverage. The elemen appetizer is standard. From left to right, it is cucumber roll, seaweed roll in sesame sauce and tomato plum. We were introduced the starters and asked to eat from right to left because it would go from light to heavy, sweet to sour. I was quite impressed.. Usually you only get …

Lean Bento @ Arcade

It is one thing to see your friend lose 20 kg, and it is yet another to see her open a new Bento Bar – Lean Bento – concept to help others achieve what she has 🙂 First off, I love Lean Bento’s clean and simple Japanese-inspired design which stands out among the shops in the arcade. It is a great use of space to be able to accommodate the CBD lunch crowd! While still maintaining the 500 calories per meal philosophy, using responsibly sourced, pesticide-free and clean ingredients, owners Charles Ng and Dionis Chiua have, after many months of research and experimentation, developed a variety of new tastes, textures and flavors. Being a vegan, I was so glad to hear that Lean Bento serves the Protein Garden ($12.90) – an ultra-low-calorie bento featuring shitake and shimeji mushrooms, sweet baby corn, edamame and chickpea salad, capsicum, wakame salad, cherry tomatoes, multigrain nigiri and home-made shoyu zero-carb shirataki noodles. The meal didn’t fill me up like our regular meal with high carbs but it kept me full for long because of the high fibre content. My favourite …

Project Açaí @ Holland Village

Project Açaí is Singapore’s first dedicated açaí superfood café. I love the cafe’s mission to show that it is not hard to eat and living healther in Singapore! It doesn’t always have to be a boring salad. In this case, the açaí bowl is an easy, energising and healthy option as either a meal, dessert, or snack! If you were like me pre-healthy lifestyle days, you will probably go – What is Acai? (pronounced ah-sigh-ee). The açaí berry grows on palm trees native to the Amazon rainforest, and its taste is a blend of wild berries and dark chocolate. The açaí fruit has up to 10 times more antioxidants than blueberries, is a great vegan source of essential fats, and helps to control cholesterol. It’s high in fibre, and low GI, not spiking the blood sugar. Açaí is also high in antioxidants, omegas 3, 6 and 9 (anti inflammatory!) and high in fibre. And Project Açaí serves Sambazon organic açaí, which grows in the Brazilian Amazon Rainforest where the berries are hand harvested by local family farmers. Where my chocolate Abs? smoothie is …

P Bistro @ Owen Road

P Bistro is a cosy hidden gem near Little India! Simple menu in a cosy space, and I’m really glad for this flexitarian cafe with vegetarian options. We shared the Pomelo Salad for starters and I love this dish! This dish had a generous serving of pomelo, with fresh tomatoes, onions and fried shallots with a refreshing zingy sauce! I would go back to eat this salad as a main. For mains, N had the Beef Bolognise Spaghetti ($18) while I tried the Vegetarian Pasta Fresca ($14). Both were splendidly prepared. The vegetarian pasta with a clear soupy base is one of my favourites in Singapore, rivaled probably only by Original Sin. With the fine quality of food at relatively affordable prices, I am not surprised they already have a second branch at Palais Renaissance! Will be back! P Bistro 42 Owen Road Singapore 218941 Phone: 6392 2333 Opening Hours: Sun – Thu: 11 am – 10 pm, Fri – Sat: 11 am – 11 pm Or Palais Renaissance 390 Orchard Road, #B1-06 Palais Renaissance Singapore 238871 Phone: 6734 9268 Opening Hours: …

3 Days Juice Fast with Queen’s Greens

Since it has been a while since my last 18 days vegetables juice fast, we decided to embark on a 3 days juice fast post CNY for a detox! There are so many cold-press juicing companies in town now but we decided to try Queen’s Greens given their affordable prices and because Queen’s Greens support local sustainable farmers; the pulp from the juicing is returned to soil to fallow, allowing for lower carbon footprint. Kelly, the founder of Queen’s Greens, also allows for high degree of customization (nut milk or without, fully organic or half organic, types of juices etc). She also differentiates her juices by working closely with clinic/nutritionist to provide juice for people with conditions to meet nutritional needs or help in healing of body. Kelly, founder of Queen’s Greens, explains her motivation behind starting this juicing business: “A friend once confided that in his late teenage years, he had unexplained boils that ‘attack’ his entire face which makes his handsome face then almost unbearable to look. He would lock himself up in his room and is inconsolable. The only thing …

Henry Vegetarian @ Upper Boon Keng (Kallang)

6 days old, Henry Vegetarian is the newest vegan stall in Singapore! And it is totally vegan! Henry, the owner, has had prior experience in another stall in Serangoon and opened now at Upper Boon Keng. Overall very good value for money and great tasting vegan food. Will be back to try others. They have 15 dishes that are constant, and 2 weekly dishes that change every week! Henry Vegetarian (Pure Vegan Dishes) Address: 5 Upper Boon Keng Road, #01-22, Singapore 380005 Phone: 8590 6995 Opening Hours: Daily 10am – 9pm

D’Life Bistro & Cafe @ Commonwealth Crescent

D’Life Cafe & Bistro is the latest vegetarian joint to hit the market. Only opened for 2 weeks, I am glad to see such a happening and hipster looking vegetarian joint (in an extremely old school charming neighbourhood next to famous 2 Chefs tze char!) we can hang out at! D’Life Cafe & Bistro is a lacto-ova vegetarian place that does not use onions/garlic/leek/chives/shallots. They also have some vegan options including vegan ice cream and vegan soy/almond milk coffee but the cakes are not vegan! Even though I couldn’t find any website on this new cafe, the owner was very prompt in replying to my facebook messages for reservations. The staff was also quite flexible in rearranging the tables so 9 of us could sit together. We ordered a main each, some side dishes and 3 desserts to share! All in all, we spent $145 for 9 of us which is quite reasonable for the amount of food! Enjoyed the Asian dishes very much and will try the Western dishes the next time we are …
