Keng Eng Kee Seafood Restaurant 琼荣记海鲜 @ Alexandra Village – Tzechar Review

Parents-in-law are finally back in town so we went to try out this tzechar place new to us. This is a very clean coffee shop that spans across 2 blocks. One section has air-conditioning and the other which we sat in is the al-fresco coffee shop style.  This restaurant is also known for its Salted Egg Yolk Crab, but we wanted something simple, so we went for the below dishes which were overall flavourful and very good value for money. Definitely good for bringing parents and grandparents for a family meal.

1) My favourite in this meal – Mingzhu Roll (明珠卷)

This is their signature dishes and it is really unique. It comprises salted egg yolk, mushrooms, ham and prawn nicely blended and fried in beancurd skin. It’s richly flavoured and oily, as you can imagine, so I started to “jelat” after 1 piece though it is very tasty. The lady ordering was smart enough to ask us to order the small serving (3 rolls cut into 6 halves – $9) for sharing and that was just-nice portion.

2) Sambal Kangkong

This is spicy, without being crazy numbing. Vegetables are fresh and crunch, and this was the first dish that arrived in 2 mins from our order being taken. Asian-efficiency to the max and quality not compromised.

3) Claypot Pork Belly (梅香咸鱼三层肉 )

Heart-artery blocking yummy but personally too fatty for me. I could only take 2 slices but feeling I was clogging my arteries. The sauce was garlic based, and slightly sour. If you love fatty pork belly, one of the best in town!

4) Kailan with Fish Slices

Average but fish was fresh without the frozen taste. Good dish to balance the palate with so many strong flavoured dishes.

5) Homemade Tofu

This is my second favourite dish. Tofu was fresh and eggy. It was soft, wobbly yet easy to cut and manage. Plus it had this mincemeat sweet mix to go with. Highly recommend!

I will try their crabs if I do get to go back!


As promised, we went back with a big group of 18 to try more dishes including their crabs! 2 tables worth of lots of food including total of 4 crabs, and it was around $30/pax. Great value for big groups!

We tried both the Salted Egg Crab Steamed and Fried. Prefer the steamed ones as the meat come off the shell in a whole slab. I learnt from the server that once the crabs are fried, they lose a bit of the freshness texture due to the high heat. The salted egg sauce is super super rich and yummy – must try crabs!

My next favorite dish was Moonlight Horfun. Soft horfun thats not overly starchy with fresh egg blended in.
