After a hard gym workout, we went to check out the The Living Cafe & Deli, along Bukit Timah Road, just before the turn into 6th Avenue. The Living Cafe & Deli prides themselves in offering healthy and raw delicious organic food that’s healthy and nutritious. They do not serve red meat, no cow dairy (good news for all lactose intolerant folks), no white sugar, no preservatives, no additives, no artificial colorings and include gluten free alternatives on our menu.
The Living Cafe & Deli is big on “RAW food”, which I learnt from their site is defined as – “Raw food generally refers to a vegan diet that goes beyond just steering clear of animal products. There’s no cooking in the traditional sense (in that nothing is heated above approximately 118 degrees Fahrenheit), and ingredients are not chemically processed, pasteurized, homogenized, genetically modified, hybridized, or otherwise compromised. The basic premise behind a raw food diet is that cooking and processing foods generally decreases their digestibility and vitamin and mineral density, as well as their overall health-promoting qualities.” These meals sure sound like they take a lot of effort to make!
The cafe/restaurant is very spacious, well lit with a retail shop on the second level.
Time to put the food to the test! I tried the Chicken Supreme Burger ($16), which had a chicken patty mixed with mushrooms, seeds and nuts, served with wholemeal bread. The “fries” on the side were made from healthy sweet potato. Very healthy tasting meal. It was pretty filling meal for me, and for the lack of better work, very natural and organic tasting, like the vegetables are freshly plucked.
N had the Salmon Supreme Burger ($18). We preferred the chicken one because the texture and structure of the meat was intact, whereas the salmon in the burger was mashed with other ingredients so it lacked the filling bite of a patty. Still fresh and healthy tasting.
I was very curious how the Raw Blueberry Cheesecake ($8.50) would taste like without dairy, so we ordered one to share. I was quite amazed and how they re-created cheesecake texture without the dairy. Of course it is not as creamy as the usual cheesecakes, but I like the natural sour-yogurt taste from the blueberries and soy.
We also shared a Flat White ($5) with soy milk. The coffee was strong and fragrant, as expected from Papa Pahleta coffee beans, but I felt the soy milk could be frothed better to make it creamier like the really good Soy Mocha we had at espressoLAB.
Overall, very healthy food at relatively affordable prices considering the effort to recreate raw food. A good place for all the calorie conscious healthy folks!
