Itch No More: Causes and Remedies for Eczema in Young Children

If your little one suffers from eczema, all these will be very familiar to you — dry, flaky skin on the neck that sometimes itches to the point of bleeding, or sensitive redness and rashes on the elbow creases, backs of knees, and even around the mouth. You dread seeing your little one wake up on a bedsheet full of blood and flaky dead skin from the overnight scratching. These are symptoms of a common condition called eczema. Eczema in children is a common and prominent condition, affecting over 20% of Singaporean kids, from babies [1], to older school-going children [2]. We work with many parents who agonise over their child’s eczema to improve their quality of life. Today, we will be sharing how you can identify the type of eczema your little one (babies, toddlers, and children) may be suffering from, and what kinds of eczema treatment and remedies are available to you. What is Eczema and How to Identify Eczema According to the National Skin Centre, eczema refers to a group of conditions …

What would happen to your body if you ate more than 20 apples a day?

But what if there is a way to eat 20 apples EFFICIENTLY every day? Imagine all that antioxidants helping our body daily! For those who are reading on free radicals and antioxidants for the first time, I recommend reading up on the scientific rationale for antioxidants to fight off free radical damage here, as well as why antioxidants are important for you here.  Those of you who frequent Eatprayflying will know we only write about products we have tried personally, especially when it comes to supplements. Because we are very particular about what we consume, trying to take in fewer chemicals to our system at all times. As such, I was really excited to chance upon an all NATURAL Phenolic Antioxidant supplement made from ONLY APPLES, which are ‘Australian Made and Grown’, invented by University Of Newcastle (UON) scientist Dr Vincent …

There’s no doubt that you’ve heard about antioxidants affecting your health at one point or another. However, what do antioxidants have to do with staying healthy? Overall, antioxidants are minerals and vitamins that especially work to protect our bodies from free radicals, which are dangerous molecules that work to attack our healthy cells and weaken the health of our immune systems. According to research, free radicals can increase your risk of cancer, brain disease, cataracts, and more. However, with the help of antioxidants, your body can rid itself of these free radicals and promote good health. These antioxidants include beta-carotene, lutein, catechins, vitamins C and E, flavonoids, and others that can be found in both food and dietary supplements. But, before you consider taking an antioxidant supplement, consult with your doctor, since they can interact with certain medications. Below, is a guide on the top 10 scientific ways how antioxidants help our health, which may give you the bump to start taking them regularly and making them part of your daily diet. 1) Antioxidants Help …

Taking Care of your Negative Ion Clothes

So many readers have reached out to get the negative ion clothes which help in adjusting pH levels to slightly alkaline (optimal!), so now I am writing a post to share what is the best way to take care of the negative ion clothes so they can continue to generate negative static for a lifetime! PS: Nefful Negative Ion material is damaged at high heat (>60 degrees celcius) so avoid heating your items! If you find your negative ion clothes have shrunk/hardened, it is very likely to have interacted with high heat and the material’s ability to create negative static is likely to be compromised. 1) Cleaning and Maintenance – Clothing Can wash in washing machine. To prevent fraying, please wash in laundry net and slower spin. (Cold/Room temperature water – Temperature below 40℃) No Ironing Can hand dry by twisting or using machine slow spin No bleeching or external chemicals. Recommended to use Nefful Bio-clean detergent.  Do not use Dryer to dry Air dry in cool place. Avoid hanging on metal rods which may heat up in sun and …

Purwa Water Distiller

Water Distiller: Purwa Water Distiller

After sharing with many people my concern on over-chlorination in our drinking water, quite a few people have asked me which water distiller I use. I use the Purwa Water Distiller. Firstly, what is distillation? Distillation is nature’s way of cleaning water. Water evaporates from the earth’s surface after rain, leaving impurities behind, and re-condenses into clouds to produce rain. Distillation process replicates this same mechanism. “Distillation is a water purification process that uses a heat source to vaporize water and separate it from contaminants and other undesirable elements commonly found in ground and surface water. Distillation heats raw (untreated) water until the water reaches its boiling point and begins to vaporize. The heat is then kept at a constant temperature to maintain water vaporization while prohibiting other undesirable elements from vaporizing. Water has a lower boiling point than salt and other mineral sediments. This process also separates the water molecules from microscopic, disease-causing organisms. Once all of the water has vaporized, the vapor is led into a condenser, where, upon cooling, the water reverts …

Getting rid of Chlorine exposure in your showers!

Following my research on the potential ills of over-chlorination in our drinking water, I became very curious about how much chlorine we absorb during our showers. Apparently, we absorb more chlorine during a 10-minute shower than by drinking 8 glasses of tap water. (1) Most substances applied on skins can be absorbed into our blood streams via our porous skin within minutes, not to mention our skin is our largest organ and is fully soaking in chlorinated water! This video shows the speed at which chlorine can be absorbed into our blood stream: Video: See how quickly chlorine is absorbed into our bodies through the skin. The focus on chlorinating water has been to eliminate pathogens, and with good reason. According to a study conducted by the Natural Resources Defense Council, more than 120 million people (about 50% of the population) may get unsafe water  for consumption. Hence, chlorination of drinking water significantly reduced mortality rates associated with waterborne pathogen. However, research is starting to reveal the risks of over-chlorination. For example, some have claimed that a substantial …

Is Chlorine Safe In Our Drinking Water?

The focus on drinking water has been to eliminate pathogens, and with good reason. For example, some have claimed that a substantial portion of the cancer risk associated with drinking chlorinated water; duration of exposure to chlorinated surface water was associated with bladder cancer risk among women and nonsmokers of both sexes. (1)  Research from the University of Nijmegen in the Netherlands discovered that people who swam in chlorinated pools or polluted waters as children had 2.2 to 2.4 times the risk of developing melanoma compared to those who did not swim in chlorinated waters. (2) “Chlorination of water rich in organic material is known to produce a complex mixture of organochlorine compounds, including mutagenic and carcinogenic substances. A historical cohort study of 621,431 persons living in …

How can Negative Ions help with Hypertension, Cardiovascular and Lung Diseases?

In my earlier article on negative ions, I explained why negative ions are generally good for us, how much negative ions we need vs how much we are actually getting, why negative ions help us fend off free radicals,  and how negative ions can improve immunity especially for cancer patients in particular. For most of us relatively healthy folks, negative ions can still help our health and PREVENT any major health issues from developing. I am compiling my research to summarize how negative ions can help improve various health conditions. This article will focus on Hypertension, Cardiovascular Disease and Lung Diseases. Negative Ions – Hypertension, Cardiovascular and Lung Diseases 1) The accumulation of fats leads to increased formation of free radicals and potential inflammatory reactions within the vascular cells and tissues. Further compounding the problem, accumulation of fats within the blood vessels also leads to narrowing of the blood vessels, resulting in overall increase in blood supply to other parts of the body. (1) Negative ions help in stabilization of the functions of the heart by promoting its muscle …
