Nabehide Japanese Hotpot Dining @ Alexandra Road

Nabehide Japanese Hotpot, above established eatery Gyukaku, was a surprise find through Palate, where members can get 50% off if 2 of us dine. So, on a Friday night, we were glad to find a new healthy hotpot restaurant that was quiet and spacious for us to have a good chat. Nabehide Japanese Hotpot is a colonial building almost a century cold, right outside Anchorpoint (opposite Queensway and IKEA).  Because the building is so old, no fire is allowed, so the owner and management took effort to import all the heating equipment (cast iron pots using charcoal to heat) from Japan that allows for quick and clean heating without fire. This means the quality meats can heat slowly and be kept warm, rather than being overheated quickly. However, the heat spreads out quickly and evenly, which makes the heating rim on the table warm but not hot, so you don’t have to afraid of burning yourself on the sides while cooking. Nabehide is born out of a need to serve the folks who are looking for …

Saboten Signature @ Changi Airport Terminal 1

When we first saw “voted top 7 in the world in 2013” sign outside of Signature Saboten, I thought it was a marketing gimmick. But I’m really glad we tried Saboten as it turned out pretty exquisite! We had sets ranging from $20-30, including salmon and pork. All the sets come with free flow cabbage, rice and miso soup (which had real pork inside!!) My set was the Signature combo ($30) that came with a 150g Pork tonkatsu, small tenderloin, small croquette and small side salad. The tonkatsu, though fried deeply, was juicy and soft. Glad for this surprise find. Probably the best and most exquisite tonkatsu in Singapore. — Saboten Signature @ Changi Airport Terminal 1 Address: #03-21, View Mall Central, Terminal 1 Changi Airport Phone: 62149504 Hours: Daily, 07:00 – 23:00

La Cuisson @ Princep Street

La Cuisson used to be based out of a coffee shop in Holland Village, but have been open at 44A, Princep Street since Sep 2013. Translating, La Cuisson should be “The Cooking”, and the food definitely impressed for the value. Incidentally, the chef, Kenneth Lin, were just featured on yesterday’s Straits Times! Their menu starts with “Charcuterie”, which is preserved meats, but in modern day, charcuterie are prepared for their flavors derived from the preservation processes. Good thing there were 4 of us, so we could try a bigger variety. We had the Charcuterie platter ($22), which comprised Foie Gras Terrine, Country Pork Terrine, Pork Head Terrine, Chorizo and Saucisson, and I like their flavours in the above order too. For mains, first up, we shared the Shoulder Tender 200 grams ($28), which is a 200day Grain Fed Australian Angus. Then, we had the Sous Vide Pork Chops 300+ grams ($33), which is cooked at low temperature served with a pork and ham jus, apples, roasted tomato, yam puree and corn salsa. I personally felt the apple …

Crystal Jade Steamboat Restaurant @ Zhongshan Park

Firstly, for all who have not been to Zhongshan Park along Balestier, I highly recommend it for grocery shopping (Fairprice Finest) for those who live in the area. Zhongshan Park, though it has a very Chinese sounding name, is a modern hotel cluster comprising Ramada Hotel and Days Hotel. The Fairprice Finest is spacious and eco-friendly, with wide aisles and great selection. They also have a dog-friendly pub – Starker Fresh Beer (Stärker Frisches Bier) with a great nice lawn to chillout. Just below Fairprice Finest, there is a Crystal Jade Steamboat Restaurant, so we went for the Kurobuta Pork Set for 2 at $39.80. It comes with 2 types of soup base you can choose from, so we chose Pork Broth and Sweet and Sour. There are also many different sauces to pick from. I enjoy the spacious restaurant, fresh meats and pretty good value meal especially after 20% discount promotion! For their opening promotion, they have the below promotion but not sure when it will be taken off. Good for families! — Crystal …

Bellwethers Bistro Bar @ Desker Road

The reviews of Bellwethers on HGW have been amazing, so we tried this bistro that opened in Jan13, for a gathering of 4 on a Friday chillout night, to further my Jalan Besar Trail. Nestled in a corner of Singapore’s oldest red light district, Bellwethers Bistro Bar definitely looks like a modern oddball at the corner of the historic shophouses. The design of Bellwethers Bistro Bar is modern, simple and unpretentious, juxtaposed against the quaint shophouses and edgy characters in the neighbourhood. Edgy enough to see police patrolling around :P. Bellwethers’ goal is to “create a quirky and offbeat watering hole away from the humdrum of Singapore’s concrete jungle and bring cool to this charming hidden gem” and they have definitely succeeded. And I am not sure what is with bicycles recently, but Bellwethers also have one in their bathroom to add to their charm. Personally feel that Bellwethers has an Aussie/NZ feel.

Starker Fresh Beer (Stärker Frisches Bier) @ Zhongshan Park

After Fluff’s dinner at III Cafe, we were looking for Chillout Round 2 for N so we ended up at Starker at Zhongshan Park. They are a pub, but they allowed dogs outdoors on their foldable seats so I am glad! Starker is know for their beers. N tried half pint of the lager from their microbrewery from Malaysia, which was very refreshing and light in the Singapore heat. Easy to drink lager… I think one can easily drink a lot of this without realizing. We wanted to try some starters and I am pretty impressed by the quality of the food! If I had known the food will be so good and pretty, we would have brought our DSLR. Only camera photos for now. The Pork Belly was crispy, well cooked and big serving for a starter! The Albacore Tataki,  very classy name for seared tuna, was very well done. The tuna slabs were raw on the inside and lightly seared, served with vinaigrette. I thought I tasted a hint of plum. I could …
