Healthy (and convenient) snack options in Singapore!

Ever since I turned 100% vegan and as raw as I be, one consistent challenge at 9pm that N and I face is – “We are so hungry and we have run out of juice/blends. What do we eat?” This puts us face to face with temptation.. Do we cook something convenient like instant noodles or stock up on convenient non-GMO chips so we can satisfying our roaring tummies before we sleep at night? (Btw I did succumb to some branded fried non-GMO chips which made my tonsils feel really uncomfortable the next day so I stopped. *sigh* Listen to the body, right?) Somehow when you have had a long day, eating healthy fruits at night is the last thing on my mind. So that started my hunt on healthy plant-based snacks that we do not need to make on our own! Yessss.. lazy busy city people 😛 Of course, my most preferred snack is still our own dehydrated kale chips – recipe here. However, we have now discovered healthy options that are ready made! …

Fried Olive Wild Rice @ Clover 8

Clover 8 Bistro Vegetarian & Vegan Dining by Miaoyi @ Kallang Leisure Park

I was so excited to visit Clover 8 last weekend, 7 days after this vegetarian & vegan restaurant at Kallang Leisure Park. Clover 8 serves Thailand, Vietnamese and Italian cuisines and also hand made vegetarian dim sum by Hong Kong Chef. Overall, within Kallang Leisure Park, Clover 8 is relatively affordable. We prefer their Asian dishes to their Western dishes. For starters, we tried their: Glutinous rice in Lotus Leaf ($4.80) – nice without being too oily! Deep Fried Cashew “Cheese” Ball ($5.80) – unhealthy but glad that there is a vegan cheese option! Toasted Ravioli ($5.80) – Don’t recommend this dish as the it was relatively tasteless and very oily! Olive Fried Wild Rice ($5.80) – One of their signature dishes and healthier option to white rice. Love the vegetarian crispy floss! Vietnam Hot and Sour Soup ($5) – Looks innocent but quite lethally hot! Pad Thai ($5.80) – Good value and decent taste for that price in a mall setting. Nasi Lemak ($5.80) – I enjoyed this dish. The mock fried fish and chilli made it …

Real Food

Real Food is arguably the leader of organic, vegetarian food in Singapore. They started in a humble space in Central, Clark Quay a couple of years ago even before juicing became a fad, and have expanded to 4 outlets in Singapore and Malaysia. Real Food cafĂ© is free from processed ingredients (food grade or otherwise), artificial preservatives and Trans-fat. Real Food is a restaurant we frequent, and Eatprayflying is privileged to able to speak to Jeeyang, one of the founders who started Real Food to understand more about Real Food’s vision and journey. One reason why I support Real Food is because they support ethical farming and ethical food preparation which really stands out in the food industry. Real Food sources mainly from organic farmers and even if the farmers do not have enough scale to pay for organic certification, the partners personally visit the farms to ensure the food is REALly (pun intended :P) free from pesticides and toxic farming ingredients. They also take pains to ensure their food is as healthy as possible – the oils …

espressolab @ China Square

I have been looking out for cafes that serve both good vegetarian and non-vegetarian dishes so we can have a good meal with our friends who do not want to eat vegetarian dishes. So I am glad to find espressolab at China Square with good selection of vegetarian dishes. In fact, Ms Alicia Teoh, owner of espressolab at China Square, was a vegetarian for a few years before! Espressolab is conveniently located in the CBD with many seats, so this is an excellent choice for lunch. The cafe is also brightly lit so it is a good place to camp at if you need to do work or have work meetings. Alicia is extremely particular about the quality of her decor and even imported all the rubberwood tables from Penang to ensure quality of the furniture is not compromised for the customers. Generally, I find that when owners are very detailed about comforts for the customers, the food and service tends to be good and espressolab did not disappoint indeed! Vegetarian dishes: Vegetarian Aglio Olio ($9.80) …

Fried Beancurd Balls with Kailan @ Zen Fut Sai Kai

Zen Fut Sai Kai Vegetarian Restaurant @ Kitchener Road

I heard of Zen Fut Sai Kai from my grandmother for decades. Now that we have turned vegan and have lesser food options, we decided to give it a shot. The food doesn’t disappoint indeed, tastes like healthier version of local tze char. Was introduced this signature dish – Fried Beancurd Balls with Kailan. They have many dishes that are full of vegetables so I personally opt for those rather than mock meats. The flavours are also very local and tasty.  No wonder they have been around for decades! Also affordable at $20+ for 3 dishes. Will be back to try other dishes. — Address: 147 Kitchener Road, Singapore 208524 Tel: +65 62912350 Operating Hours: Tue-Sun: 10am – 930pm (Closed on Mon)

Zenxin Organic Park @ Malaysia

Triggered by this opinion article published by Straits Times, “Is organic food really free from pesticides?”, we decided to pay Zenxin Organic Park in Johor, Malaysia, a visit. Since we buy so much organic produce from Zenxin in Singapore, we wanted to learn – what makes a farm organic, if the produce are really free from pesticides and why is organic produce good for us? Before embarking on the farm tour details, I wanted to learn – what makes a farm an organic farm? Since 2008, the Zenxin production chain has been certified organic by NASAA Australia (www.nasaa.com.au), which is accredited by IFOAM, and they strictly comply to the international organic standards. Zenxin’s compost factory is Certified Organic Input Manufacturer, their farms are Certified Organic Producers and their processing houses are Certified Organic Processors. Mr Tai Sengyee, Executive Director of Zenxin Organic, explains that in order to be certified organic, the farm has to fulfill a few main criteria including: No synthetic fertilizers, herbicides or pesticides Natural source of water Sustainable system with 10% land set aside for …

Top 6 Food Ingredients that is making you sick… (and more likely to get Cancer)

Before my mum was diagnosed with cancer, I hardly read food labels. Because I struggled with my weight, the most I would do is to glance at the calories and fat levels before deciding on the purchase. Now that I am aware and actively checking ingredient lists, it shocks me how much potentially harmful ingredients I was ingesting without realizing. So I took a walk around a random supermarket in Singapore today to see common ingredients we should avoid to improve our health to share with all of you. And I hope you too, will start looking at food ingredient labels when purchasing food for yourself and your families.  1) Sugar (and refined sweeteners) If you have cancer, sugar in any form is a big no-no. All cells, including cancer cells, need glucose in order to produce the energy necessary for survival. Cancer cells have developed a very effective strategy (glycolysis or fermentation), to ensure they survive; they grow many extra insulin receptors – 10-19x more than regular cells – on their surfaces in order to …

Spaghetti Soya Bolognaise @ Cafe Salivation

Café Salivation @ Little India

CafĂ© Salivation is the first Western Vegetarian CafĂ© that opened in Little India since 2008. They use no MSG in their cooking which is why I was keen to try. We started off with a strawberry shake that was supposedly vegan as it is from soy milk. But in retrospect, the server didn’t seem too confident when he answered me, so for fellow vegans, I suggest you double check before ordering! The first main we tried was Penne Arabiatta ($11), which was Penne pasta tossed with button mushrooms, red/yellow/green capsicums and garnished with red chilli flakes. The tomato base was very fresh tasting, and the chilli gives it an adequate punch without being too spicy.
